Facebook has added another modification to its constantly evolving algorithm. This new change is induced in the News Feed Algorithm. This News Feed Algorithm modification was announced on Thursday. The effect of this new modification in the algorithm would reflect in improved timelines of its users’ posts. To put it in simple words, this new modification would allow the users to have glimpses of posts from friends and pages which they want to see, in a more time-organised manner.

Explaining the modification to its users, Software Engineer Erich Owens and Engineering Manager David Vickrey elucidated in a blog post that this new modification is bifurcated into two instrumental changes brought to the News Feed in order to organize and display posts in a better organised manner. The first change which has been brought is to counter the irrelevance of a post after a certain period of time. Users have found that certain posts have a shelf life of relevance, especially event related ones. Thus, when a post relates to currently discussed topics or trending events for the users, that post would have a better probability to be stacked higher in the News Feed. This would allow the users to get access to the posted within the ‘time domain of its relevance’. Earlier tests conducted by the social media giant revealed that there are 6% more chances of witnessing these posts if displayed as per the new News Feed Algorithm.

The second set of modification for boosting the hierarchy of News Feed about relevant posts for users is more centric to the engaging-ability of the posts. Several posts are more engaging immediately after they are posted and tend to invite lesser number of responses after a few hours of the posting. The new News Feed Algorithm would give preference to such posts when they are engaging users at a better pace. Hence, these posts would appear higher on the News Feed for that time period and later, as its engaging ability diminishes, its hierarchy in the News Feed would also witness similar trend in an according manner and also in relevance to other posts which invite preference due to their better user-following probability.

These modifications shall be rolled out by Facebook in a gradual manner; and the social media giant does not expect much significant changes cropping up in the post reach metrics due to these modifications, labelling it as a subtle modification.
